This is a training weapon I designed in collaboration with Bill Grandy of the Virginia Academy of Fencing. He needed a weapon to use in armored combat practice that would permit strikes with the guard a pommel but wouldn’t ruin armor (or damage the person inside), and retained a stiff blade without being too heavy. After a few prototypes we settled on this design.
It features a blade of 1/4” thick 7075-T6 Aircraft Aluminum with a full-thickness rounded edge. There is a waisted area mid-blade to provide a sure grip when using half-sword techniques. Additional small pieces of aluminum are riveted to the tip, creating a thicker tip (~0.5”) to prevent it from slipping through small gaps in armor and helmets.
There is a steel rod pinned to the end of the tang that provides for a threaded connection with a steel insert inside the pommel.
The pommel and guard are made out of 95 Durometer high density rubber, which provided the best balance of shock absorption and rigidity amongst several test materials. The grip is solid 3D printed PETG plastic wrapped in leather or rubber.
The standard weapon has a round ball pommel. The scent stopper shape is available for a little more money. Both options have a steel threaded insert threaded 3/8-16.
The standard weapon has a bright brushed finish. A higher polish can also be provided, as can fullering, etc. by request.
The stats are as follows:
Weight: 3.2 lbs
Overall Length: 49.25”
Blade Length: 37.5”
Grip Length: 9.25”
POB: +8.25” from base of blade
