Diamond Pattern Scottish Basket Hilt 1
Diamond Pattern Scottish Basket Hilt 1
This sword is based on an antique piece c.1740 (see the final picture). Like the original, the blade is etched with the Jacobite slogan "GOTT BEWAR DE AUFRECHT SCHOTEN", a German blademakers’ interpretation of "GOD PRESERVE THE UPRIGHT SCOTS".
The steel hilt has a somewhat unusual diamond pattern with each bar fullered and grooved. The grip is wrapped in stingray skin and brass wire with steel ferrules. The basket liner is buckskin and red velvet trimmed in blue silk.
The blade is single edged with a false back edge and two fullers. It started it’s life on a Cold Steel English Backsword. Mounted here it’s extremely nimble and feels like a real dueling blade.
The hilt secures with a pommel nut threaded 1/4-20.
