Early Basket Hilt [SHARP]
Early Basket Hilt [SHARP]
This Scottish basket-hilted backsword is of an early design, based on an antique piece sold by Alban Arms (formerly of the Earlshall Collection) which they dated 1545-1560 (see final pictures). It is mounted with a sharp double fullered blade by Armour Class.
The large globular pommel is hollow, and similar in mass to a later period basket hilt pommel. The knucklebow-bar sits in a hole in the pommel, while the side bars sit just outside. Each shield panel sports a carved face, and the long quillions are curved back on themselves.
The grip is bound with 9 strands of brass wire (6 straight and 3 twists) to create a banded effect. The pommel is secured with a brass nut.
The scabbard is brown leather over a flexible core with brass fittings.
