Pipe Hawk 3
Pipe Hawk 3
This tomahawk head is cast 4140 steel mounted on a curly maple handle. I don't make these axe heads myself. I buy the raw cast heads, clean them up, fit them to handles and then pin the heads in place for extra safety.
These axes mount "tomahawk style", which means the eye of the axe head is tapered to match a tapered shaft....i.e. the axe can't come off the end of the haft because the eye is smaller at the top than at the bottom. They are mounted by carefully matching that taper at the top of the wood haft, then sliding the haft in from above. Then it's pounded into place to ensure a tight fit.
This one has a steel top-plate with a threaded pipe-cleaning pick finial.
